Hello En My story

A long, long time ago, somebody drew me on a damp freshly made brick. So began my life at Turaida Castle. Over 20 years ago, I was discovered and recognised by archaeologists, because I’m holding a weapon for throwing stones – a sling. Just like David from that wise book – the Bible. It contains the story of the brave shepherd David, who battled the giant Goliath. Huge in stature and extremely strong, Goliath had beaten everyone and there were no brave souls ready to fight him. Although I was a little body, I defeated the giant with my cleverness, courage and determination!

Since birth, I’ve lived in a clay brick – of the kind that Turaida Castle is built from. My life in Turaida Castle is bright and happy, although I don’t have any parents to ask how old I am. I can’t grow up to be an adult – I’ll always be a little boy who lives in a brick and only turns into a human being at night, in the early morning and in the evening.

Although it is now located in the castle cellar, my house is very cosy. I experience all kinds of exciting experiences. And I’ve had some really scary adventures when I’ve had to do some really heroic things like becoming a knight and going into battle on the back of a horse, or following in the footsteps of the crusaders. Even when others get cold feet and their legs are shaking, I’m never afraid – I’m confident and fearless, particularly when I draw my sword. My eyes flash and expel sparks! I’m very clever, because I live in a museum and every day listen to stories about olden times told by wise, educated people and antiques – old books are especially talkative! I’ve experienced a great deal. I learn everything quickly and can teach others. I know how to write on a parchment scroll, on a wax board, or on whatever is at hand – be it a damp brick or paper sheets. My friend pays most attention to my stories, that’s Jovars my dog, as well as some squirrels, an old grey rat and a raven who flys in at the same time every evening. I like it when my friends believe my stories, although sometimes it’s hard to say what I’ve really experienced.

Sometimes, when there’s a a storm outside, I stand guard by the door with my sword at the ready. On quiet evenings, I run up the tower along the steep stairs and observe the sky until the stars appear. If I’m lucky, I collect stardust – it comes in useful when I want to shine!
